On Derby Day, do not wait until mid-morning to leave for the track. The routes into Churchill Downs on Central Avenue get backed up well before first post. Most guests use offsite parking at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center and shuttle in — if that is your plan, leave earlier than feels necessary. Traffic around the Spaghetti Junction interchange of I-64, I-65, and I-71 backs up significantly on race days. Third Street and Fourth Street into downtown move better than most visitors expect, but that changes by early afternoon.
For the rest of the week, Louisville rewards the people who go off the standard itinerary. Bardstown Road in the Highlands has some of the best bourbon bars and restaurants in the state. Not just distillery tour stops, but actual local spots where people who live here eat on a Tuesday night. NuLu, the East Market District, has become one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Louisville for food and independently owned shops. The Big Four Bridge over the Ohio River is a pedestrian walkway with a view worth going out of your way for. The Louisville Slugger Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, and Cave Hill Cemetery, one of the most beautiful historic cemeteries in the country, are all within easy driving distance of the track.
