Derby Week Is Expensive Enough – Your Car Rental Should Not Be

Over 150,000 people are going to pour into Louisville for the 152nd Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2026. Most of them will spend too much money on a rental car and get too little in return. They will book through a national chain, show up at the counter after a long flight, and learn the hard way that their debit card triggers a credit check and a $300 hold they did not budget for. Or they will find out the car they reserved is not actually there. You do not have to be one of those people!

TNA Rentals LLC is a locally owned car rental company based in Crestwood, Kentucky, just outside Louisville. We have been taking care of drivers across Oldham County and the greater Louisville area the right way: transparent pricing, no hidden fees, and real people who pick up the phone. If you are coming to Louisville for Derby Week 2026, this is the call you should make first.

What Derby Week Actually Looks Like on the Ground

Derby Day is May 2nd. Gates at Churchill Downs open at 9 a.m., first race goes off at 11 a.m., and post time for the Run for the Roses is approximately 6:57 p.m. ET. But if you think Derby is a one-day event, you are missing the whole thing.

Racing begins April 25th and builds through the week. Dawn at the Downs starts April 23rd, where you can watch Derby and Oaks contenders run their morning workouts at Churchill Downs while eating breakfast in the Stakes Room, one of the most unique Louisville experiences you will find. 502’sDay on April 28th shines a spotlight on the city itself. Winsday on April 29th supports Louisville’s nonprofit community. And Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 1st, is its own event entirely, a premier race for 3-year-old fillies with an 8:40 p.m. post time that now runs in primetime for the first time in the race’s history.

That is a full week of things to do, places to be, and distances to cover across a city that does not have the public transit infrastructure to carry 150,000 visitors on its own. You need a car.

Why the Big Chains Fall Short During Derby Season

Every year, the national rental counters at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport get overwhelmed. Rates surge as demand peaks. Vehicles run short. And the policies that frustrate customers all year get worse when the staff is slammed, and availability is thin.

The debit card problem is real, and it catches people off guard every year. Major chains like Avis require a credit check at pickup when you use a debit card, plus a hold of up to $500 on top of your rental cost at airport locations. Alamo requires a ticketed return flight itinerary just to use a debit card at the airport. Enterprise has its own set of restrictions depending on location. These are not small print issues; they strand people at the counter.

At TNA Rentals, we keep it straightforward. The price you see is the price you pay. No surprise holds. No fine print that changes the deal when you arrive. We accept debit cards because we understand that not everyone uses a credit card, and that should not be a reason you cannot get where you are going during the biggest week of the year in Louisville.

Rates That Make Sense for the Week You Are Already Paying a Lot For

Tickets, hotels, restaurants, and the perfect Derby hat add up fast. We are not going to be the thing that breaks your budget.

TNA Rentals prices vehicles fairly because we are a small, locally owned operation, not a franchise answering to a corporate rate structure. We offer week-long and multi-day rentals for Derby visitors, and we will work with you to find an option that fits your timeline and your budget.

If your plans shift mid-week, you are talking to a person, not a call center.

Local Knowledge You Cannot Get From a National Chain

Here is what we know because we live here.

On Derby Day, do not wait until mid-morning to leave for the track. The routes into Churchill Downs on Central Avenue get backed up well before first post. Most guests use offsite parking at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center and shuttle in — if that is your plan, leave earlier than feels necessary. Traffic around the Spaghetti Junction interchange of I-64, I-65, and I-71 backs up significantly on race days. Third Street and Fourth Street into downtown move better than most visitors expect, but that changes by early afternoon.

For the rest of the week, Louisville rewards the people who go off the standard itinerary. Bardstown Road in the Highlands has some of the best bourbon bars and restaurants in the state. Not just distillery tour stops, but actual local spots where people who live here eat on a Tuesday night. NuLu, the East Market District, has become one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Louisville for food and independently owned shops. The Big Four Bridge over the Ohio River is a pedestrian walkway with a view worth going out of your way for. The Louisville Slugger Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, and Cave Hill Cemetery, one of the most beautiful historic cemeteries in the country, are all within easy driving distance of the track.

We are happy to give you a more specific list based on what you are looking for. Just ask when you pick up your keys or when you call to book.

Vehicles That Are Ready When You Are

TNA Rentals maintains its fleet personally. Every vehicle that goes out is clean, inspected, and reliable. We provide 24/7 support throughout your rental period, so if anything comes up during Derby Week, you are not waiting on hold with an 800 number; you are reaching a local team that can actually help.

We do not overbook. When a vehicle is available, it is available. That matters more than you might think during a week when the entire city is at capacity.
